Closing of the bones: A post partum ritual

A Ritual for Integration, Transition, and Returning to Yourself

there are moments in a woman's life that change her forever.

Birth. Miscarriage. Weaning. Motherhood. Loss. Divorce. Illness. A child leaving home. A season ending. A new identity emerging.

While our culture often rushes us toward the next thing, many traditions around the world recognized the importance of pausing to honor what has been lived and consciously crossing the threshold into what comes next. Closing of the Bones is one such tradition.

Rooted in postpartum care practices found across many cultures, this ceremony offers a space to be deeply nurtured, witnessed, and held. Through warmth, touch, wrapping, rest, and ritual, we create an opportunity for your body, heart, and spirit to integrate your experience and gather yourself back together.

It is about honoring who you have become.

This is not about returning to who you were before.

What Is a Closing of the Bones Ceremony?

Each ceremony is personalized, but may include:

  • Intention setting and guided reflection

  • Warm herbal tea and nourishing support

  • Gentle bodywork and grounding touch

  • Warming Ceremonial Bath

  • Wrapping of the body with woven rebozos

  • Rest and integration

  • Time for sharing and witnessing

The wrapping process invites a sense of containment and support, creating space for the nervous system to settle and for the body to feel held. Many women describe feeling lighter, calmer, clearer, and more connected to themselves afterward.

Who Is This For?

While often offered during the postpartum period, Closing of the Bones is not only for new mothers.

This ceremony may be supportive if you are:

  • Integrating a birth experience

  • Weaning a child

  • Moving through grief or loss

  • Experiencing a major life transition

  • Marking the end of a relationship

  • Entering a new season of womanhood

  • Longing to reconnect with yourself

You do not need to have given birth to benefit from this work.

Any significant transition deserves tending.
